Wanna smell like fashion icon and French it girl Jane Birkin? Then look no further than L’Air de Rien by Miller Harris, a perfume made especially for Jane and dubbed the “Jane Birkin perfume”.
I’ll be honest, I only “discovered” Ms. Birkin somewhat recently (you don’t blame me, do you? I was a 90’s kid!) and wow – I totally understand why she was such a fashion icon! That effortlessness, tomboy-yet-very-feminine quality about her style, makeup, attitude… just so pretty. I suppose the modern day equivalent would be Alexa Chung, who reminds me a bit of Jane.
The Story Behind L’Air de Rien
So it’s really no surprise that someone would want to bottle that “spirit” of Jane. As the story goes, Jane longed for a fragrance that would “describe her true self”, and Lyn Harris, creator of Miller Harris, granted Jane’s request, whose only brief was for something “ethereal and airy”.
The result was an airy, slightly “dirty”, musky scent, which Jane wore and has said to have cherished for some time.
Notes include amber, vanilla, oak moss and musks, and if you look closely at the bottle, it features doodles by Ms. Birkin, too – as Lyn was completing the perfume, Jane was sitting across from her, doodling William-Blake style nymphs, and Lyn thought that putting Jane’s artistic touch to the bottle would “complete” the perfume. And it has.
Nostalgia in a bottle?
The result, to me, smell very… nostalgic, a little musky, and has that slightly damp scent that lingers in my clothes whenever I visit Europe – a scent I love, even though some might say it just smells like soggy clothes. L’Air de Rien has that kind of quality (I read a review that said it smelt of an old library), but to me the only real way I can describe it would be that the scent captures that musky, cozy, comforting feeling in your clothes. I really like it.
In other words, if only to find out what could possibly capture the icon herself, definitely check out the the Jane Birkin inspired perfume. It’s always so cool to see if a scent can really capture the essence of someone, and this was one of the successful ones for sure. But if you’re a Birkin fan – this is a must-have. I think you will agree that it does capture that effortlessness that Jane exudes – feminine yet tomboy and undeniably stylish.
