If you’re a fan of the reality TV modeling competition, America’s Next Top Model, Jourdan Miller needs no introduction – she was the winner of Cycle 20, the first season where they included not just female models in the running, but also male models. In my eyes, she was the clear winner – even Tyra Banks said so: “Jourdan you’re just too good!” – and she not only stole the prize in the end (a Guess ad, NYLON magazine spread, NEXT modeling agency contract) but I truly believe the title as well: there is no doubt that Jourdan will be the next big American model.
In this new series at Blog for Beauty, I want profile young men and women who I think are doing amazing things in the world of beauty – whether in cosmetics, perfumes, the arts, or inner beauty such as self-esteem and body positivity for women. Jourdan exclusively talks to me about modeling, self-esteem, confidence as well as what’s next for this rising star.
Hi Jourdan! How are you?
Hello! I am doing great! How are you?
I’m also doing great! Thanks for chatting with me. To begin, could you give us an introduction about yourself?
My name is Jourdan Miller and most people know me from winning America’s Next Top Model, others know me from my Instagram account @lovejourdan.
You won America’s Next Top Model Cycle 20 – congratulations! How was the experience, did you enjoy it?
Thank you so much! The experience was never dull, I can tell you that! I enjoyed every minute besides being so far away from family and friends.
I can imagine it was tough to be away from family and friends, but so worth it in the end! You spoke about an abusive relationship on ANTM – why was it important for you to talk about it?
I think that honestly, I was still healing from a broken heart and let down expectations, so talking about it on the show actually propelled my healing and acceptance of the situation that I had put myself through.
What would be your advice to young girls who are in the same situation?
My biggest advice for young girls out there is to never forget your power as a woman! If someone does something that hurts or makes you uncomfortable, you HAVE to speak up!!! Tell them NO and then make sure to tell someone about it. There are so many different forms of abuse that it can happen to anyone.
So true. A big goal of my site is to help young women feel and be more confident about themselves. How did you get confidence to become a model? Were you always very confident, have there been times you felt you had low self-esteem/confidence? How did you overcome it?
I have had my fair share of bad hair days, bloated tummies and days I just don’t feel pretty. Every woman out there goes through it. The best way to get over low self-esteem or confidence issues is to own your flaws and love them. We are all so afraid of being different from one another, yet it’s the most beautiful thing about beauty. Self-esteem is really just an attitude adjustment and no one can change it but you.
I love that last line. As a model, there are lots of young girls looking up to you. Do you see yourself as a role model, and if so, what would you want your “message” to be to your fans who look up to you?
I feel like a role model when I am scrolling through comments on Instagram or Facebook, the amount of support and love that I have received from fans is so incredible! I am blessed to be able to lead a new generation! I think that my message to my fans is truly unconditional love and gratitude for their support and to always remember to be themselves in everything that they do.
What inspires you? Do you have a role model for your life?
I am inspired by traveling, magazine editorials, Instagram feeds from models, photographers, stylists and brands, and everyday life! I don’t really have a single role model at the moment, but I mostly look up to all the supermodels, past and present!
Tyra Banks is a famous role model for young girls – I love her stance on self esteem and body image. What is she like, and what did you learn from her during your time on her show?
Tyra is taller than you think she is, but she is so perfect. Her skin illuminates and her eyes pierce your soul! I learned to be a strong woman from her. She doesn’t let anyone or anything get in the way of her dreams.
I was at a press conference with her once for Top Model and her eyes are incredible! I would love to meet her someday, too. Now let’s talk beauty! Could you share some of your beauty tips? Is there anything special you do with your beauty routine, and what are your favorite makeup products, hair products, perfume?
I make my own perfume from aromatherapy oils because I am sensitive to regular perfumes on the market. Most of the products that I use are all natural or have a shorter list of ingredients because your skin is the largest organ of your body and it absorbs what you put onto it. My favorite natural brand is Burt’s Bees.
Thanks for sharing! You’ve moved to LA to pursue your dreams of modelling – so exciting! Are there any fun things happening for you in the future you could tell us about? What’s next for Jourdan Miller?
Right now I am focusing on strengthening my portfolio and taking it slow. There was a lot of excitement that followed ANTM and I need to take care of myself so that I don’t run ragged. I tend to lose weight when I am over-stressed and lately my focus is to gain about 5-10 pounds.
I know being a supermodel is one of your dreams and I think you are on your way. But do you have any other dreams and goals in your life? What do you want to leave as your legacy in this world?
There are tons of ideas that I throw around on a daily basis, but my number one goal is to finish my education. I graduated early from high school and got my GED so now I want to go to college. I have to find the right balance, but with dedication, I know that I can do both!
I am so happy to hear that as education is extremely important, and I wish you all the best in that. Thank you for taking the time to talk to me. Readers, you can follow Jourdan’s career and life updates on Instagram, and let me know if there are other inspirational women you’d like me to feature.
