Every since I was a little, I dressed like a tomboy. I was a “girly girl” in every other aspect of my life, but when it came to style, it was heavily influenced by males in my life.
Whether it was my dad’s funny friends from his days on the ship (a big part of my childhood was full-blown nautical), a friends older brother, or characters in movies, whoever I thought was cool; I took inspiration from.
It’s no surprise, then, that most of my makeup inspiration has come from men as well – as strange as that sounds! So I thought it’d be fun to take a trip down memory lane and share some of the makeup inspiration over the years…
Johnny Depp. My favorite TV shows are super old-school, and one of them would have to be 21 Jump Street. It was on before I was born, so it’s very dated, but I still love everything about the style. Johnny Depp’s style in particular was my favorite, and the thing that I noticed most was that he seemed to be wearing a thin line of black eyeliner on his lower lash line. I kept wondering if it was makeup or not, and eventually found out it’s totally natural – it only looks like eyeliner! (Which is actually the point of eyeliner, to make the lash line look darker and thicker.) Still, it was Johnny that made me realize that sometimes, a simple line of dark brown eyeliner on the lower lash is all you need for nicely defined eyes.
David Desrosiers. David is the bassist of Simple Plan, a band my best friend and I loved when we were just starting high school. (Sidenote: I was a bassist in a band for awhile in high school; and I was terrible.) At one point David started wearing this neon red eyeshadow, and as someone who only wore messy black eyeliner, red eyes seemed so… different – I liked it! I immediately told myself I needed a red eyeshadow. This was back in the day when Singapore didn’t have as many brands as they do now, though, so red was very hard to find. My poor friend and I spent so long trying to find something – anything! – like it, and finally settled on this weird orange color from Guerlain. As you can imagine, it was pretty bad. (I should’ve just asked David what he was using, I actually met the band some years after.) Either way, I still love the look of red eyeshadow today, and although I’ve evolved to more reddish-brown hues, it’s still all thanks to David!
Dane DeHaan. This one is fairly recent. I’ve been huge fan of Spiderman since I was 12, and I loved Dane DeHaan’s portrayal of Harry Osborn/Green Goblin – I was intently studying his face throughout the movie (as a makeup artist, I can’t help it)! It could also be ’cause he looks exactly like a male version of these cartoon girls I draw, but I also noticed his lip color throughout the whole movie. I think it was the tint of the actual movie, but it made his lips look wine stained, and I immediately wanted a shade like that. The answer is Clinique Chubby Stick in Pudgy Peony. I apply only a touch of the product directly to the lips, and then take my finger to smudge the rest all over my lips. This gives a beautiful bright stained effect… inspired by the Green Goblin, of all things!
